I am really sad to write this review because it looks like this app has helped a lot of people and I do not want to dissuade people for trying it for themselves, but I feel like I need to share my experience. Despite my experience I do think it is pretty low risk to give it a try and see if it works for you. I just want to share my experience so people do not think they are crazy if what happened to me happens to you!
I used this app for a little over a week. During that time, my symptoms got substantially worse and I ended up experiencing symptoms I didn’t even have before. The hypnosis talks a lot about all kinds of symptom that people have with IBS, some of which I do not. After a couple of days those symptoms started to develop. I actually didn’t even know what they were in some cases because I didn’t ever have them before (for example, reflux). In addition, the hypnosis encourages GI functions that are the exact opposite of what my issue is (IBS-D) and that worsened as well. I eat a low FODMAP, gluten-free, dairy-free diet and maintained my diet the whole time. I know I did not eat something by mistake because that would have caused 2-3 days worth of symptoms (not a week and a half) and would not have included the symptoms I wasn’t experiencing.
I stopped the app and within 2-3 days my system returned to “normal”. I am convinced that it was the app and not anything else in life.
I am giving this 2 stars instead of 1 because I can see where it is really effective for people where it works. I was suuuuuper relaxed during the hypnoses and at one point when it was over I realized I was drooling!! Maybe it works better for people with IBS-C and symptoms like reflux, wind, pain, etc. which it talks a lot about.
Honestly I think it is worth the $80 to just give it a try and see if it works for you given how many people have responded well. For me personally my worsened symptoms resolved within 2-3 days of trying it and I think it was worth the $80 just to give it a try. People who are complaining about the $80 probably aren’t as desperate for help and at their wits ends like some of us are. I would almost empty my bank account for a cure at this point.
I would probably give hypnosis a try again if I could have someone who could customize it for my specific symptoms and issues.

No choice of narrator
The narrator’s voice is not for me. With such an expensive app you need a choice to help you work better with the content. Very disappointing.

May work for some but did not suit me.
Each session in the first week begins with a guided meditation. It did not relax me as intended, making the rest of the session seemingly useless.

These people advertise it as an 8-week “program” to help with IBS. What they are actually selling is a $200 a year subscription to their meditation content. The content itself is fine and might work, but I will never know because I fell for an instagram ad presenting it as a “program” and not a subscription. Suffice it to say after a year I lost access to the “program” I thought I had paid for. If the content of the program doesn’t change in any way, it makes no sense to charge people a subscription, and the advertising is borderline fraud.

Ripped off
I was only provided one subscription option (annual) and not provided with any other options (weekly, monthly, etc). Did not use the app for more than 2 or 3 months total in total, but paid full price for a year smh; not worth it.

im too poor for this :-(
My doctor recommended this app to me, but I can't use it as I'm a lowly college student that can't afford to drop $200/year on an app. It looks very cool from what I can tell though.

I had Nerva on and off for a couple years. I found that some of the sessions were helpful, but there isn’t a lot of content for what you pay for. It is so sad that people dealing with pain and discomfort do not have better access to care. It’s already extremely depressing living with chronic pain and illness, then worrying about finances on top of that adds a whole other layer of grief.

Hypnotherapy was recommended to my teen by multiple GI doctors based on their belief she has a Vagus Nerve issue. She does not have IBS. The language in the hypnotherapy is more for IBS. It made my teen so angry that they implied she would never be fully better that she refused to listen past day 1. Some kids can experience full recovery with a Vagus Nerve reset. I’d recommend an adjustment as the doctors say that the number of kids and teens with this disorder are on the rise and hypnotherapy is a good option. Please tell me if you fix it so we can try again? She NEEDS help. Thank you.

Repetitive audios
The app and the content are good, but the sessions are repetitive which for me makes them become annoying and eventually impossibly to listen to. The same audios are recycled so by week three I couldn’t stand it any more.

Disappointing guided hypnoses/meditations
I’m happy to see that others are finding success here. I find the hypnoses to be poorly written to the point that they’re distracting and frustrating. They use a lot of adverbs and describe a lot of incongruous images.
No improvement to symptoms.

I really wanted to like this app especially for the price and given it came highly recommended however found the guided sessions very repetitive and somewhat illogical to follow, which made it very challenging to continue to do them 5 days a week for 6 weeks. I can meditate and don’t find that frustrating or repetitive but the guided visualisations and prompts in these sessions were a struggle to get through.

I really wanted to give this app a chance, it looks really good and there’s a lot of good reviews as well! I made an account and did the first steps it asks for the “ day” but there was nothing else after. There was no button or anything there that would allow me to start tracking my symptoms, and when I contacted support they didn’t really give me an answer besides purchasing the subscription in order to do so.. which is confusing and not very helpful when you don’t have the full amount to pay now and just want to see how the app is before purchasing the subscription.
I would love to give it a chance again if they do fix that, I could’ve possibly just not seen where the option was but I know I searched everywhere so I’m not sure… a little disappointed I won’t lie.
But I did appreciate the educational information it gave, so that was a plus at least.

What bothered me more than anything is they offer a 7-day trial but claim the program takes at least 4 weeks to begin having an impact. You can’t pay monthly subscriptions and it’s expensive! I contacted their CS bc I got an email asking if I had questions. I told them what I mentioned above, thinking they’d actually care about my comments, but she did not. When I told them I thought I would probably cancel after the free trial due to the $200 program, they responded with, “Ok we have cancelled your free trial.” No interest in keeping me. Maybe this program could help with my IBS but I will never know.

Trial was way too short you barely have a chance to see if it works for you. I paid for the annual subscription and then realised it wasn’t for me. I would recommend some alternative voices to guide you through the therapy as the app developer chooses an overly “woo” lady that lays the whole journey on so thick, it doesn’t feel genuine or engaging. It just made me want to close the app and delete it. Not worth the money (for me personally).

I thought I’d really like this app when I did a couple of days listening to it during the trial so let it go onto the really expensive paid version. Well then I just realised it’s virtually the same content over and over. My biggest big bear is that the app keeps on progressing days regardless of whether you listened to a session or not. So for example I might have listened to 3 sessions in 7 days and then rolls me onto week 2! I’m on week 6 now having listened to maybe 5/6 sessions. Absolutely not worth the money for the sparse content, I don’t want to clench all my muscles and release them each time I listen to this thing!

Questions about Nerva
What the reviews don’t cover.
Does Nerva work?
Nerva is a self-guided gut-directed hypnotherapy program that works with the gut–brain connection. Reviews describe individual experiences; clinical research looks at outcomes across a group. Explore Nerva’s published research to understand the evidence and what was measured. Individual results vary.
What do Nerva reviews say about bloating?
Some members discuss bloating in their reviews, including how it affected everyday life and their experience with the program. Read the selected reviews mentioning bloating. These personal experiences cannot predict your own results.
Can I use Nerva alongside a low FODMAP diet?
Nerva focuses on the gut–brain connection, while a low FODMAP diet focuses on dietary triggers. They are different approaches. Read more about low FODMAP and Nerva, and discuss dietary changes with your dietitian or clinician.
What is it like to fit Nerva into a daily routine?
Members recorded them on their own phones and shared them with Nerva. They are unscripted. What each person describes is their own experience; individual results vary.
