So, firstly, use their website to get the app. The trial period is longer that way. The trial was why I gave this a shot. You can do the whole program and if it doesn’t work, they’ll refund you. If it does, the money is worth it. They fully acknowledge that it doesn’t work for everyone but does for a huge amount and this is so generous of them. Honestly, I’m the kind of person who is always in the doesn’t work group so it was a big factor in taking the leap.
Anyways, long review ahead but I’m shocked to be proven wrong this time. My symptoms tend towards looser stools but very much still back and forth with constipation. The education and hypnosis has made my urgency managed, my perception of set backs to not be a catastrophe, and my Bristol scale trend towards normal most of time. I have “full evacuations” without “splinting” most of the time (used to always need it) and it seems like my motility has sped up which is what my doctor said was likely slow and worsening symptoms.
I was consistent with listening (about 6 days a week) which I know made a difference. I also fully would snap my eyes open at the end of each session with restored energy after feeling limp and fully relaxed. It really focuses on gut specific imagery/guidance, not just relaxation but working to decrease gut sensitivity. I also love that it uses the recordings of the doctor who pioneered the treatment.
My main complaints without docking a star:
The sessions are a bit repetitive over time. There’s about 10-15 that get cycled through. This in some ways provides a familiarity but also can be annoying when getting the same instructions and occasionally made me feel a bit cheated. I wish it was at least newly recorded. Once I’m in hypnosis mode I can’t really move so I get irritated about it sometimes. Still worth it though.
My intense bloating hasn’t really changed which is a huge thing for me. But this points to trying things with my gastroenterologist. The program doesn’t disencourage working with doctors, either.
I do wish it was more affordable but ultimately it would’ve cost a lot to do with a practitioner. I’m following up with a gut CBT clinician to really drive things home (covered by insurance) but I don’t regret this at all. I hope I’ll keep at the maintenance sessions as well. Have fallen off a bit but I know it will help. Here’s hoping it lasts. I feel hopeful.

My IBS started when I went off to college in 1973. That’s such a long time to be dealing with chronic digestive issues. Pain from gas, bloating, squeezing feeling in my intestines from hyper motility, intermittent diarrhea and constipation, endless testing and you know the rest. No food plans have helped and I’ve tried most of them. Many of course made my symptoms worse. Even Low Fodmap diet didn’t help at all. Staying away from white foods was the most helpful, but no matter what, I still missed out on a lot due to symptoms.
Turns out the Dr at the student health center was on the right track all those years ago when she had me doing progressive relaxation. It didn’t work for me then, but it did this time. I’ve done quite a bit of meditation through apps in the last few years to calm my anxiety and ADD, yes I’m that person. Somewhere I saw the info on the Verve App and decided that it was worth my time and money to calm down my nervous system.
I enjoyed all of the daily sessions and have learned so much about how to calm my system down and activate the vagus system. I am a scientist, so was encouraged by the science and common sense behind each week. Every morning I would start the day with the reading and the meditation, or sometimes at night. By week four everything started to settle down, and today as I finish my 6 weeks , I am grateful for all the lessons learned and look forward to being able to eat without so much fear on a long awaited trip to Italy.
Thanks so much.

By way of background, I’m 35 years old and for circa 10 years I’ve suffered dreadfully from IBS and the pain, nausea, bloating etc. that comes with it. Whilst in London I spoke with numerous Dr’s and dieticians, one who said I had an allergy to garlic - turns out I don’t. I just couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me. The more I got stressed about that, the more my symptoms flared, to the point where I was sleeping sitting upright for months on end. Fast forward to 2020 when I visited a fantastic gastrointestinal Dr in Melbourne, a leader in her field, and she knew in an instant it was IBS and set out a few steps to address the issue. She started with looking at my diet and making changes (FODMAP), she checked my bloods (then booked me in for an iron infusion), did a colonoscopy, prescribed vitamins and fibre, set me on a course to increase fluid intake and exercise / more incl. meditation and finally gut hypnotherapy. Admittedly, I thought the latter was a little hocus pocus and I went into it thinking it wouldn’t do anything. How wrong I was! Whilst my Dr recommended a specialist who did gut hypnotherapy, they had a waiting list of 2-3 months, they were 1 hr drive away and then Covid lockdowns kicked in. That’s when I found Nerva (and cue the clapping hands). I did Nerva every evening before bed which was very convenient. I like that I can do it anytime, anywhere especially as I don’t have much spare time. I also like that Nerva reminds me to do the hypno session, again as I’m usually running around / flat out and at risk of forgetting to do it. If I can’t make the session the reminder is set for, I’ll push it back to later that evening - something I wouldn’t be able to do if I was booked in to see someone. Also a specialist gut hypnotherapist is more expensive than the app. Once I completed the course, I felt so much better. I wasn’t bloating up as much or at least feeling the pain that goes with it and nausea was almost zero. I’ve been sleeping better too, not once needing to sit up to sleep. I have less flare ups but they still happen every now and then - but less frequently than before. When they happen I immediately turn to Nerva, it’s there at my fingertips when I need it. The flare up tool kit is just want I need to manage my symptoms. I’m not one to write reviews but I would encourage anyone suffering from IBS to give it a go. Whilst it might not work for everyone, it’s completely transformed how I feel, eat and live. Thank you team Nerva!!

My gastroenterologist suggested I try it. I’ve been having a lot of bloating and really bad stomach aches and medications were not helpful. I love more natural approaches to managing IBS. This didn’t do much for me. The sessions repeat from week to week and some are better than others. But overall didn’t have any effect on my IBS. Perhaps if this was done in person it would be different.

I signed up for this on the Rec from my doc after bad stomach post food poisoning. I didn’t have any of the symptoms in their initial survey- no bloating wind belly pain anxiety depression worry constipation or diarrhea. I guess I should be glad it’s a single symptom. I had paid so decided to try it anyway. The visualization exercises were nice enough the lady’s voice calming and several times I fell right to sleep. Others listened all the way through. After six weeks my body hasn’t changed and I answered the survey questions honestly again. No change. And yet they said congratulations you have improved 86%. If that’s the kind of “science” this is based on I’d call it fraud. Becuz NO APP, nothing whatsoever has changed. However if u have these symptoms it could in fact work. And the exercises might help u sleep at night. So there’s that.

My doc recommended to try this. Although I enjoyed the relaxation sessions they didn’t apply to me. From day 1 I didn’t have bloating gas nausea pain constipation or diarrhea. Nor did I have anxiety hopelessness or worry. If you have these things it might be helpful. The lady’s voice is very calming and visualizations are nice. Hilariously even though I rated none of those symptoms from day one for the full six weeks they said I improved by 86%. If this is what they consider science then it’s not much better than snake oil. But still worth a shot.
